How to Format a USB Flash Drive to FAT

Overview

Floppy Connect requires a USB flash drive to be formatted as FAT or FAT16. In addition, the Floppy Connect requires a drive to be 2GB or smaller. This knowledge base is written for Windows 10 or newer, however, steps for older operating systems is very similar. 
Contact SFA if you would like to purchase a pre-formated USB Flash Drive. 

Requirements

  1. USB Flash Drive with 2GB or less storage
  2. PC with an USB port

Check Current Format and Size

  1. Plug in the USB Flash Drive into an available USB port
  2. Disregard any prompts or pop-ups
  3. From "File Explorer", go to "This PC"
  4. Right-click the USB Flash Drive
  5. Click Properties

  6. Confirm File system says only "FAT"
    1. "FAT32" is not compatible and the drive will need to be formatted, see Format the USB Flash Drive below
  7. Confirm Capacity is 2GB/2000MB or less

Format the USB Flash Drive

  1. Plug in the USB Flash Drive into an available USB port
  2. Disregard any prompts or pop-ups
  3. From "File Explorer", go to "This PC"
  4. Right-click the USB Flash Drive
  5. Click Format...

  6. Change File system to "FAT"
  7. Click Start

  8. Once you confirm you are formatting the correct drive, Click OK

  9. Once the Format Complete prompt appears, click OK, you are done
