Troubleshooting Haas NGC Remote Net Share Authentication

Troubleshooting Haas NGC Remote Net Share Authentication

Overview

Some earlier Haas NGCs have issues authenticating with Windows shares. This article will detail some options to make this work. Please try each one in order. Alternatively, updating the Haas NGC to the latest firmware is the best choice.

Requirements

  1. Local Administrator Rights
  2. Credentials to Access Shared Folder
  3. Comfortable Editing the Windows Registry

Option 1 - Basic Troubleshooting Steps from Haas

Haas has a well thought out Troubleshooting Guide. We recommend reviewing it before proceeding. The one to pay attention to is about LAN Manager authentication level and its reads as follows:
Ask your Network administrator to try to access the Local Net Share from their PC.  If they can connect they will need to review your Local Security Policy on your PC.  Make sure the Local Policies>Security Options> Network security: LAN Manager authentication level is set to "Send NTLMv2 response only".  After making the change cycle the power on the PC and try again.  Important: Always check with your network administrator before changing any security settings.

Option 2 - Use Server Hostname as Domain/Workgroup

We have seen entering the file shares hostname or IP into the Domain/Workgroup Name. e.g. share UNC path is "\\sfafileserver\ncprogram", you enter "sfafileserver" into the Domain/Workgroup name.

Option 3 - Set LAN Manager Authentication to Not Defined

You cannot set this to "Not Defined" from the local security policy window. To accomplish this, you must delete "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\LmCompatibilityLevel" from the registry, then reboot the file server. Be sure to back up the Window Registry before doing so.
